Bonded labour is one of the biggest socio-economic problems
of India. It is being practiced in this society since ancient times and
unfortunately, it is still continued to be in practice in various forms. Under
the bonded labour system, a person is given no or nominal amount in return for
his/her labour. People, who don’t have land, education and well economic status
are forced to be bonded labour.
Organs and causes of bonded labour:
·
Caste based discrimination
·
Vast poverty and inequality
·
Inadequate education system
·
Unjust social relations
·
Governments unwillingness
I am talking about a village, which is a bounded labor
free village. The village name called Saraiya, which lies in Prinda block
Varanasi district. it is 3 kilometer far from main highway. It has 26 households with around 200 people. They
all are from Musahar Community. When we entered the village, we saw managed
homes with electricity and Solar panel as well as water hand pomp. There is
primary school with all those facilities.
Around 8 years ago, People of Sariya used to work in brick
factory as bounded labor. They don’t have other working option. They hardly
worked in factory but they did not get their salary on time, they never got
full working amount. Owner of factory forcefully engaged them to the work. They
all were discriminated from caste based discrimination and highly suffered from
poverty. They were very silent; they did not want to talk with unknown person
because of fear. They were scared by police pressure. If there was any criminal
case on nearer village police used to arrest Musahar people. They don’t have
proper home for live, they don’t have Rasan card as well as voter ID card.
PVCHR and dignity
initiative adopted Sarai village as torture free model village in 2010. PVCHR conducted several meetings for awaking them and lobby
with their problems.
Musahar people have started to talk about their own problems.
They came to know about their rights and started demanding basic necessities
with government. Now days they have proper home, all household things, Rasan
card as well as voter ID card. Children’s also started to go to school.
I recently visited the village; I felt there were more
other rising issues. They have home but they don’t have any regular resources
for daily survive due to which
they are again heading to do the work
in the brick factory. They are empowered to talk with the
owner of factory to get salary in time but they want option of this job.
Well education, local awareness and empowerment is
needed to uplift their life style, along with this all government should also
implement different plans and policies and should play vital role in uplifting
their life standards.
Freedom is not only the big issue in comparison with
their life style. At first they used to face the problems of house to live but
nowadays they are facing the problems of food for living their daily life. Government should implement relevant plans
and policies to control bounded labor.
For this government should provide farming training,
and develop kitchen gardens. As they are still not very sensitive on sanitation
issues government should flourish awareness on this issue. India which is currently at top of world economy
should be marching towards social harmony too; this is what I wish.
We all want to live with peace and dignity so let’s put
hand in hand and unite together
